question BS"D
I don't understand 2 statements of Rabbi Garelik?
statement 1) Rabbi Garelik in source 2 (from the Rebbe's sicha) makes it quite clear what the question is of the Beis Yosef which The Rebbe is explaining. There it states that
מכיון שבפך הנמצא הי' שמן מן המוכן ליום אחד, הרי שלא הוצרכו לנס
אלא לשבעה ימים, ולמה תיקנו שמונה ימים לחנוכה? since that the jug was found for 1 day, therefore they only needed the oil to burn miraculously 7 days, why then did they make chanukah 8 days?
Statement 2) Rabbi Garelik then above has stated that the question of The Rebbe is "what was the miracle of the 7 days" and not why we celebrate 8 days? The two statements seem to contradict? Please clarify

Re: question Dear Yitzchok and Eliyohu,
First see my answer to Menachem above.
I will explain it again in other words:
The main focus of the Rebbe in THIS sicha, does not have its goal to provide the answer 101 to the question of the Bais Yosef…. In THIS sicha the Rebbe analyzes one thing only: what exactly happened with the oil:
according to the 100 answers there were two basic options; That it empty out every day or every day an eighth was consumed. The Rebbe gives the revolutionary third option of “Nimna Hanimnoois”.
In order to be able to summarize this “sugya” (dissertation), as there are so many opinions – I chose the simplest way, and that is, by prefacing the Sicha with the question of the Bais Yosef as beautifully illustrated by Rabbi Zevin. By doing this, we were able to obtain a broader and clearer and summarized picture of all the opinions on the actual miracle.
Therefore, I did not discuss what happened the first or last day, as this is not the issue at question. The question is: what actually happened to the oil. Perhaps at a later occasion we will deal with the answer to the Bais Yosef’s question.
If you see the curriculum, it summarizes the issues that we will discuss. I do not write there: what was the miracle of the first day? Or why do we celebrate 8 days instead of 7? Because that is not one of the issues that we are going to discuss in the class.
Additionally, regarding Eliyohu’s second point: if the miracle also extended to the first day or not - is irrelevant to the explanation of the miracle of the oil. If the first day it burnt miraculously or not does not take away from the fact that the other days it burnt in a way of “nimna hanimnoois”.
I hope this clarifies the issue.
Thanks a lot for your comments.

Just something else: In note 7, you bring the pre chadash which is clearly giving a reason for 8 days of celebration, Not why we have 7 days of celebration i.e. he understands the beis Yosef as what Menachem asked you before and it seems the other meforshim also understand it the same way

I don't understand the answer to menachem's question you stated above -The question of the Bais Yosef, is what “triggered” all the commentaries to analyze what was the miracle of Chanuka in general (in the other seven days). - BUT in the class you quoted (source 2 from Rabbi Zevin) the question exactly as Menachem said. In other words you said that if they had enough oil for at least 1 day why keep 8 days? The question is not why on the other seven days is there was a miracle but why 8 days? Please clarify

Why 8 days? According to the Rebbe's explanation that the oil burned, but didn't burn at the same time, shouldn't there have been a full menorah when the 8th day came along?
If so, why was there a miracle on the 8th day? Let the menora burn naturally on the last day.
If so, doesn't the question of why 8 days and not 7 apply?
And if the miracle extended all 8 days, what happened to the oil after the 8th day? Did it remain in the menorah?
-------
Also, according to the Rebbe's answer, did the menorah burn for 8 days straight, or did they extinguish and rekindle the menora every night (the standard procedure according to Tamid 30B)?

Re: Why 8 days? בס"ד.
Dear Menachem,
Thank you for your questions.
Regarding the question what was the miracle of the first (or the last) day? The Rebbe asks this question in several places. He actually adds that how can we say the blessing of “Sheoso nisim Laavoseinu” on the first night? The miracle started the second night?
The Rebbe answers based on the Gemoro (that was quoted in the class): The Gemoro asks “What is the miracle of Chanukah”? and the Gemoro answers that they “found” a jug” (miracle number one) and it lasted for eight days (miracle number two). (see farbrengen of Parshas Miketz 5741 and Vayeshev 5742).
However, this is not the main focus of the Sicha that we learned.
The main point discussed is as follows:
The question of the Bais Yosef, is what “triggered” all the commentaries to analyze what was the miracle of Chanuka in general (in the other seven days). And above-it-all - why we make such a big deal about a jug of oil that lasted longer than usual, when the widow by Elisha had the same thing and perhaps more?
And the answer is, that the miracle that happened (in the other days) was not your average miracle, like the widow and splitting of the sea, rather “Nimna Hanimnaos”. Unique in history.
* * *
Regarding your second question, whether every day they extinguished it or not (standard procedure) – this a question also according to Reb Chaim… I would like the Briskers to answer this questions….
I do not recall the Rebbe discussing this, but my assumption would be, that since the Yidden wanted to perform the Mitzva Lemehadrin, so they did the “Hatovas Haneiros” exactly how the Halocho usually requires.
The only thing close to this that I recall is, that on Shabbos Parshas Eikev 5740 the Rebbe brought a “Chidush” from the Ragatchover, that every day of Chanuka they used a new Menorah!
In that case for sure they did the cleaning every single day…..
Keep those questions coming!
A freilichn Chanuka!

I don't understand in source 2 you quote Rabbi Zevin (who is quoted in the sicha to explain) that
מכיון שבפך הנמצא הי' שמן מן המוכן ליום אחד, הרי שלא הוצרכו לנס
אלא לשבעה ימים, ולמה תיקנו שמונה ימים לחנוכה?
since the jug of oil was avilable for 1 day, they only needed the miracle for 7 days and so why did they set up the holiday of Chanukah for 8 days?
This clearly states that the Beis Yosef is asking why 8 days and not what is it that triggered all the commentaries. The Rebbe is explaining as far as I understand one of the views of the Beis Yosef, which still needs to be explained, why 8 days?

A 'hakham says: it's kosher, another disagrees and says: it's not. The two 'hakhamim represent the truth of Hachem who can maintain, in the same time, two things in contradiction. Happy Chanukah and thank you very much for your chiourim.

Re: hélou véhélou divré élo-khim 'haîm I do not think it is necessary to go so far. Nimna Hanimnaot we say only when no other alternative. In your case, it makes sense that every opinion is true from a certain perspective. Rabbi Garelik?
I guess your two opinions represent Eilu VoEilu Divrei Elokim Chayim…..
Rofoel, you have made my day with this question, because I wanted to address this issue in the class but it would take a minimum of an hour and half to explain it (I hope to do it maybe – bli neder – in honor of the Siyum Horambam) so I have a reward for you and a surprise, and here is the point:
It is a known concept, that during the time of Golus, we do like Bais Hilel. During the “first stage” of Moshiach we will do like Bais Shamai. So Elu Voelu Divrei Elokim Chayim gives room for both, depending during which period. However, the Halocho in actuality can be ONLY like one. (There can be two valid opinions, but when it comes to actuality, only one can be followed).
However, in Tishrei 5752, the Rebbe tossed a “bomb” and explained that in the “second stage” of Moshiach we will perform like BOTH opinions… in actuality!! How? Nimna Hanimnaos…. (see sefer Hasichos 5752 page 34).
But please don’t ask me to explain it in writing…. It requires a separate Shiur…..
Please continue asking excellent questions.
Happy Chanuka!

Re: the miracle Dear S,
In the Sicha, in footnote number 30 the Rebbe has a lengthy elaborations on this.
Briefly (as explained in the class): regarding the bush the Torah says "Vehasne einenu ukal" the bush is not being consumed. The fire burned without consuming. This was oa average (regular?) miracle.
While on Chanukah, the oil was being consumed AND not being consumed at the same time. Hashem performed two miracles simoultaneously which are the opposite of each other. This is called in Hebrew "Nimna Hanimnaos". The bush was just a Nes.
[Besides that nowhere does it say that the fire of the bush was a natural fire etc. while the fire and oil of the Menora was NATURAL]
