  Dignity

  We have been learning about the epic battle in time to come (soon) when levisan and the ox will battle.  The scene of the barbaric fights of olden times that the Romans orchestrated was discussed.  For entertainment, the rulers would pit animals against animals, people against animals or people against people and have them fight, oftentimes to the death, in a coliseum as blood-thirsty spectators reveled in the spectacle. 

  America is apparently more tamed and civilized.  Our sports and entertainment also involve physical struggles between people.  We don't have gladiators fighting to the death.  Yet we do have boxing and martial arts where people are entertained by two individuals (may even be women these days - equal rights you know) pummeling each other into a bloody mess.  Ocasionally death results from these encounters. 

  Football is pretty tame compared to death matches in Roman coliseums yet one who has ever attended a game can feel the aggression.  Sometimes fights break out in the audience between rival fans.  Sometimes players get terrible life changing injuries from fierce collisions on the field.

  Dog fights and cock fights take place illegally in this country.  Vicious and brutal, people revel in the raw violence.

  Unlike our holy people - we have a halacha that one is not even allowed to raise a hand against another Jew (and for sure not to strike another).  Have you ever seen two Jews fighting?   A dignified, honorable, caring, honorable and truly civilized people.   Compare the Arab shuks in Israel with the Jewish shuks and you will notice a difference.    May we all be blessed.
