      Curriculum

To understand what the spies said, that this is a “Land which consumes its inhabitants.”

The spies claimed that Eretz Yisroel is such a lofty spiritual place that if a person was to fall from there, he would never be able to rise again, G-d forbid.

This reason for this is, Eretz Yisroel embodies the level of Asiya ShebeAtzilus [the level of action within the world of emanation i.e. an extremely lofty state of existence.] This means that Eretz Yisroel communicates the level of Atzilus in the physical world of action. For example, the G-dly revelation within the performance of a Mitzvah or the study of Torah etc.

Now, this [the level of action - performing mitzvos] is the exact opposite of Hislahavus [enthusiasm] and Devikus [cleaving]. When a person is in a state of intense cleaving to G-d, he is unable to “lower” himself and involve himself in mere acts etc.

However, when a person reached the level of absolute selflessness of Ma shebeChochma, [lit. What of Wisdom i.e. when the brain makes room for wisdom to enter] he is at a level where he does not sense himself or his desires as being important at all etc. He is then able to “lower” himself and become involved in mere actions, because he has no desire other than fulfilling G-d’s “will” and causing pleasure to G-d. This is “the word of Hashem = Halacha.” G-d is present automatically within Halacha, without the person doing anything [there is thus no “I” involved in this type of study.]  And similarly in performing the physical mitzvos even in a state of coldness.

However, it is possible for the person to fall from this level of selflessness to a point that he becomes totally apathetic and coarse and says, “I only possess Torah,” etc, “only the garment,” etc, and similar statements. And like the concept of “if he does not merit…” [the Torah becomes poison, Taanis 7a.]

This is the meaning of, “[The land] consumes its inhabitants.” He is able to forfeit love and awe as a result of the self-suspension through true selflessness.

Kalev responded to the spies, “their protection has been removed from them… for Hashem is with us.” This means, although a person may fall, nevertheless it says, “Hashem is a man of war,” and the person will be able to rise from his fallen state since the Torah and mitzvos contain within them real G-dly revelation. And even though he has become  coarse, nevertheless, the light that is within the Torah and mitzvos [and thereby within his soul] will bring him back.

For the primary aspect within the mitzvos are the “birurim” [elevated sparks] – to elevate the good from the evil, which is also a war as it is known. About this it is said, “Hashem is a man of war” in the battle of Torah and mitzvos to extract the holy sparks. With this being the case, even if a person fell he can rise again because “their protection has been removed” – it has been elevated through Torah – “for Hashem is with us.”

However, with the  state of Hislahavus, when the person falls from it there is no one who can restore him, since he has his own ego, and is distant from Hashem, etc
