A group of chasidim from Reissin once came to Reb Dov Ber of Mezritch with a problem.  On the one hand it was such a long way to Mezritch that they were unable to visit him for spiritual guidance as often as they would wish:  on the other, they did not want to remain without a rebbe for long periods of time.

The rebbe gave them one of his cloaks, together with a black silk belt and a staff and said “Take these things and give them to a man by the name of Mendel who lives in Vitebsk.  Whenever you find it difficult to come here, you will be able to draw inspiration in your divine service from him.”

Off the chasidim all went to Vitebsk in search of a man called Reb Mendel.  The tzaddik whom we know as Reb Menachem Mendel of Vitebsk was not yet renowned, so most of the townsfolk whom they asked simply answered: “There isn’t any Reb Mendel of that kind around here!”

In the course of their investigations, however, they encountered a woman who asked: “Gentlemen, whom do you seek?”

“We are looking for Reb Mendel,” they said.

“There is no Mendel around here of the kind who is called rebbe,” she said, “but there are plenty of people called Mendel – my son-in law for example.”

Surmising that this was perhaps the man whom they were seeking, they entered her house, met her son-in-law, and handed him the articles that they had received from the hand of the Maggid of Mezritch.  Reb Menachem Mendel garbed himself in the cloak, wrapped the gartel around his waist, and took the staff in his hand.  And from that moment the chasidim did not recognize him:  he was a man transformed, and they stood before him in awe.
