G-d Within Or Above? The Error of Nadav And Avihu

How Should I View the Annoying Details of Life? The Debate in Kabbalah, Philosophy, & Halacha

1 hr 57 min

Class Summary:

One word-change in Shemini offers a new depth into understanding the error of the two sons of Aaron, Nadav and Avihu, which led to their sudden demise.

The Rogatchover Gaon, Rabbi Yosef Rozen (1858-1936) offers a novel and brilliant approach into their “sin.” They embraced the notion of “transcendental providence,” vs. “individual, detailed providence.” The two approached find their expression in philosophy, kabbalah,  halacha, and daily life.

    Musical Prelude

May I suggest that you omit the musical prelude to sedros which fall during the omer period ( as well as during the 3 weeks).

Thanking Rabbi YY for his beautiful and stimulating shiurim.

In pasuk טי, it says וַ֠יַּקְרִ֠בוּ בְּנֵ֨י אַֽהֲרֹ֣ן אֶת־הַדָּם֘, this was a karbun חטאת, the reason why this karbun was considured a mitzvah is because it says in פסוק י׳ "כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־משֶֽׁה" "HaShem commanded moshe to do this speicial קרבן, meaning it was an exception. Later, when it seems that aahron does a קרבן עלה in פסוק tet zayin rashi quotes the words "ויעשה כמשפט" which means that this was a VOLENTARY offering, therefore, they did not get a mitzvah unlike the first case where hashem commanded him.

Hi Rabbi, how can an old man (in case of Aaron) or even a young man climb a ramp that's at a steep incline (close to 20* - possibly) while carrying blood and the meat of the sacrifices... and walking barefoot on salt? Assuming that that's even possible and isn't a nes, such a feat of physical prowess, overcoming the dangers of slipping on the smooth stone ramp and breaking one's neck, G-d forbid, is certainly not irrelevant. And why is it that in all the sacrifices mentioned in the Torah, such a physically non-trivial activity as the climbing of the ramp never expressly mentioned? Yet the shechting, the sprinkling and the burning is mentioned all the time. It's possible I am wrong on the details, so I'd appreciate more specifics.

If the Rambam's halacha of Holech ( walking with the korban ) shows that Hashem is involved in the details of the world, then how come the Rambam himself says in his doctrine on Hashgacha Pratis that Hashem is NOT involved in the details.

In other words, how do you learn something out from the Rambam's halacha when he himself says the opposite of what you are trying to learn out?

    Thank You, Nusi Offenberg

Could it mean that when we make choices that oppose or challenge His Word and Will for us, He then lets Nature, the Laws of Creation, follow its natural course without His Interfering on our behalf. Which is still Hashgacha but of a different quality, not "Pratis", not Above Nature, which does apply to Am Israel when we comply with His Will.
The Rambam explains this question when he talks about the influence of the stars, astrology, on Am Israel.

      1. Are you not giving the Rogatchover's view of that Rambam,
      2. The two inyanim he discusses come from separate sefarim of the Rambam written at different times in his life. Plenty of places he does not agree with himself and changed opinion.
