What if you make hamotzi, eat, and forget to bench, chas v'shalom!

and can't get back. Can you then eat elsewhere just to bench to make up for the mistake???

Yes you can. But once 72 minutes have passed since you finished eating (this is considered the digestion period), the time slot for bentching has expired.
Even if you do not have new bread to eat, within 72 minutes you should still bentch wherever you are.
      Clear?
